Rough couple of weeks
For those wondering "why on earth hasn't this grandmother been posting," my home was totally destroyed by a raccoon! I've been displaced from my home! This isn't the forum for discussing the utter chaos. Suffice to say, I'll soon be completing my posts from 15 May through last night!! Thanks for your patience!

Happy Mother's Day
Before I was a Mom,
I never tripped over toys
or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not
my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom,
I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind
and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom,
I never held down a screaming child
so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night
watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom,
I never held a sleeping baby just because
I didn't want to put her down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces
when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small
could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom,
I didn't know the feeling of
having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel
to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond
between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small
could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom,
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night
every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth,
the joy,
the love,
the heartache,
the wonderment
or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much,
before I was a Mom.
Being a Mom, for nearly thirty-five years and having four wonderful children is probably the greatest blessing that I could have hoped for. They grow up, they leave (or die), they build their own lives and no matter what, nothing will ever change the fact that I am their Mom. What a life! What blessings they have been! And, I'm thankful for my memories . . . every one of 'em. Mother's Day is a good day to go through old photos and treasure boxes.
When they need something, they always call. Otherwise, they are busy with their own lives.
May you always be overwhelmed by the Grace of God rather than by the cares of life and be grateful that you have experienced being a Mom. Happy Mother's Day and do enjoy your children no matter how old they are!

Taking a break from stitching throw pillows
Mommie and Daddy made a run over to Rhythms on the River for a little time alone. That meant that Ms. Meka and I could play with the babies until it was bathtime. We decided to take a break from Baby Einstein on tv so that we could be outside on the patio.

Avery got to sit in "the office" and was busy taking in the gadget before her.

It didn't take long for her to start grabbing at the music buttons. Her afternoon entertainment! She was fascinated (and somewhat startled) when she discovered that the buttons made the music play for her.

Riggs was patiently sitting in his Combi pod. He's turning out to be quite the "laid-back dude."

Then, Ms. Meka picked Riggs up so they could sing the ABC song together.
Though both Avery and Riggs are still a little sick with their colds, they didn't let that slow them down as they enjoyed being outside. I adore watching Avery and Riggs in what appears to be just another little plain old everyday interlude in the lives. Being there to observe their expressions as they discover something new and the coohs that come from the moment or babbling in the song about the alphabet . . . there's just nothing sweeter. There are those who have gobs of photos of "events" and that's a good thing. I wanna make sure that in my gobs of photos of the twins that I have pictures of moments where I was able to be with and enjoy them. You know, Dearie's Darlings!

Four Months old TODAY!! Yippee!
My, how time flies when one is having fun (or, being busy . . . whichever is the case!). I can hardly believe that it has been four months since I rec'd that phone call from Anne while I was in a meeting with Edward's office in across campus a little after noon.
Verbatum transcript:
ME: Anne?
Anne: Mom. My water broke. We are on our way to the hospital.
Me: I'm on my way. I'll meet you there!
Anne: Okay.
By 12:28 pm, I was not only parked at Women's and Children's, I was upstairs in the waiting room. Tim wheeled Anne through the waiting room a little after 1 pm.

Just before 1:30 pm, Tim emerged from the delivery room beaming as he announced, "The doctors are about to deliver the babies."

Back to the Delivery Room to be with the Mommie-to-be!
At just about 3:26 pm, escorted by their very proud and excited daddy, Tim marched in front of the babies in their little plexiglass cart as they were being wheeled down to NICU.

I got to see my little darlings for the first time. They were fine little babies! Little being the key word in the statement! Tim's enthusiasm was especially exciting!! I'd never experienced a father of newborns excited like this!

Baby Girl Ryan (no decision on whether to name the baby girl Ella Lucille or Avery Kathryn but named Avery Kathryn before leaving W&C!)

Baby Boy Ryan was immediately Riggs Trey!!
The Mommie would be a couple more hours in Recovery before settling into her room. She was tired and in need of rest. Little did she know how much rest she should have taken when she had the chance.
Four months ago today! Seems in the same moment that it has been forever and then, just a a blink ago!! I guess that is how our mind sort of organizes those experiences that are so precious to us so that we don't become overwhelmed with emotion. It has been a very busy time and then, one filled with so much joy seeing Avery and Riggs as they continue to grow! Dearie's Darlings forever!!
What a special day this Mother's Day will be! Anne gets to celebrate her first one!

Cinco de Mayo PHOOEY! My Oh de Binkie por Avery!!!
Avery Kathryn and Riggs Trey have a cold (at least, that's what we think they have!). The day began with Aunt Eryn working out of Daddy's office (since he's in Bal'more this week!) so that Mommie wouldn't be alone with the babies . . . and, Dearie was going to work at her office so she could finish up her end-of-the-semester projects. Well, that's just not quite how the day came together. Mommie called Dearie at 9:45 and said, "when can you come to the house?" I tidied up what I could and rushed out to 107 for 10:30.
When I arrived, it was just about feeding time. That went well for both babies. Once they were down for playtime, I got busy cleaning the panes of glass on the doors leading out to the patio. All was well. THEN, Eryn had to leave. THEN, it was time to put the babies down for the big nap. THEN, Mommie had to run some errands. I kept right on cleaning glass, toting the baby monitor with me.
I heard Avery Kathryn stirring. I washed my hands and went to the nursery. There she was, lying on her back and talking to the angels. All was well, I thought. THEN, when I looked for her baumbie so that I could put it back in her mouth . . . it wasn't anywhere to be found! That is, until I looked at her right hand. IT WAS A FIRST AND I GOT TO BE THERE FOR THE MOMENT!! She had managed to get her baumbie in her hand and was quite pleased with the fact that she could put it in her mouth and take it out all by herself! I ran to find Mommie's camera but she'd moved it from the coffee table so, I pulled my little pocket camera out of my purse and dashed back to the nursery . . . hoping the moment would last long enough for the photo op!! It did . . . and then some!

We had to change our panties 'cause we like clean, dry panties all the time. She didn't let go of the baumbie!!

See Dearie, I can put the baumbie in my mouth all by myself!!

Wanna a bite of the baumbie Dearie? Just teasing you Dearie, it's mine!!!!
Pleased with all the praise she was receiving for being such a "big" girl, she held tight to the baumbie until she went back to sleep!! She didn't grasp it again yesterday but I'm sure she'll remember what she did today or tomorrow so that she can begin the process of building her own little neural network of things she KNOWS how to do!
Yep, gals catch on a little more quickly than the fellas!! I think its just a matter of self-sufficiency 'cause the fellas instinctively know they will end up having to do everything anyway!!!

Riggs and Dearie, Avery and Abigail, Avery and Riggs
With his little cheeks red from fever, his fussing made him more miserable, so while sister took her afternoon baumbie (we'd already finished ours!), we sat together watching "Baby Einstein" for a while!! Now really, do you think Riggs is into comfort? Dearie's lap is a perfect chair and her arm, well, isn't that an arm rest???

The hours of the afternoon were filled with all sorts of less than run-of-the-mill experiences. While Mommie was feeding Avery, Abigail decided that Avery's boppy might be a good place to rest for a while.

When Avery was finished with the baumbie, she wanted to get back to her boppy and that's when I shot this image!!

Abigail was a bit indignant that Avery was "hogging" the boppy! Come on Abi! It is Avery's boppy!!
Later, it was time for play on the Einstien mat:
And then, a little sibling hand holding . . . Avery and Riggs are so sweet (do check out where Avery's got her new bib attached . . . on her leg! Is this a new fashion statement??) Even on a day filled with tons o' cryin' 'cause they didn't feel well, they still managed to provide an entire day of delight for their Dearie. That would be simply because they are Dearie's Darlings!!

Stitching throughout the house!
While Mommie and Daddy were tending Avery and Riggs, Dearie had other tasks to tend, like making the table cloth for the round table in the living room. Just so everyone will know, the table cloth is for my darlings. Following their baptism in a couple of weeks, Mommie and Daddy are having a reception at the house and though there are those who would think that stitching for the living room might be different than working in the nursery but the object is to have the house complete for the babies. I know you get this logic!!

From a couple of scraps of fabric, voila!

The 135th Running of the Roses and My Darlings' 1st!!
Five years ago, Anne made her debut at the Kentucky Derby bringing Abigail Leigh a stuffed "Smarty Jones." This year, Avery Kathryn and Riggs Trey were definitely dressed for the Derby but they each had other ideas and experiences about what was special about the day! Next year will be better!

Oh Daddy! Just a sip . . . hey, this stuff's really good!! I didn't know we could eat leaves!!

How exciting Dearie!! I don't have a clue what the Kentucky Derby is but I sure do like all the animals and the people on TV. Is this our new Baby Einstein?? What is a pony? Daddy, do I get a pony someday? Hey, this is some strange music!

Dearie, we wanna pull for Einstein in the Woodford Reserve!! Hey Dearie, why are these ponies running in the grass? I thought you just told us about the dirt track for horse racing and how today the dirt was mud because of the rain last night! Did you know the ponies would run on the grass?

Yea!!! We won!! Our pony, Einstein, won the race!! Dearie, what do we get?? This is so fun!! What happens now!
Clearly, time we got to THE race of the day, my li'l darlings were sleeping. What a run it was and, "Mine the Bird" definitely proved that miracles, in the face of all obstacles, can AND do happen. I knew that all along . . . Avery and Riggs are living proof!
