When I arrived, Daddy was holding fussy Riggs and Taunte Clair was doing her best to entertain antsy Avery in her bucket (Carrier!). It was just a little after 5 and clearly, my darlings do not enjoy having their schedules altered. It was THEIR dinner time! I took Riggs from his daddy and that sweet thing settled down immedately! Daddy went off to prepare dinner. Mommie was still getting her hair cut. With meals prepared, Daddy and Taunte Clair took over Riggs and my little darling, Avery, would have no one but Dearie feed her!! (Clair was taking too long to get the food into Avery's mouth 'cause she was busy wiping excess food from Avery's face between spoonfuls!!) Fifteen minutes later, two happy, full-bellied babies were ready to entertain! Avery had perfected the "raspberry" and Riggs has done likewise with his left-footed dance in the Johnny Jump.
Uncle Buddy continued to "observe" he entire process and commented, "when the twins are able to walk and use the pottie, I'll take 'em every weekend! We can go to the mall all day on Saturdays (now imagine, he's offering to give up Saturday golf for this!)." Confused, I asked him what the draw was . . . duh, "kids are chic magnets!"
Once everyone took their place at the dinner table, (Avery in her bucket and Riggs in his Johnny Jump again) conversation was light, lively and most entertaining. Mommie getting Uncle J's recipe for the marinara sauce and sharing some of her newest culinary creations, Taunte Clair telling all that they ground the brisket themselves to make the meatballs, Daddy and Uncle J discussing the variances between real estate legalese here in Louisiana compared with the rest of the world . . . all the while, enjoying every tidbit on our plates!!
Avery began fussing. Mommie scooped her up from her bucket so that she could sit in Mommie's lap. She immediately began trying to get her hands on the few pieces of spaghetti in the bowl. Mommie, offered her a two inch piece of the pasta and Avery just slurped it up like she'd been eating spaghetti her entire life!! I couldn't believe it!! She must have had six more pieces and with each one, she would perse her lips and suck the spaghetti in! So where did the Italian come from? Is that on Daddy's side of the family???

With the table cleared, we remained there . . . reminded me of dinners at my grandmother's when I was much younger, big people sitting around the table with three or four conversations going on at once and children in the room but busy with their own entertainment! Then, it happened!
Then, it was cake and baumbies. We had the cake and the babies had their baumbies. With totally filled bellies, the darlings tried to stay awake. Mommie cleaned them up and dressed them in their jammies. Avery didn't make it, she was asleep in no time. Riggs wasn't sure that he could sleep unless he was tucked in his bed so he fussed. Mommie and Daddy started loading the car with the portable house of supplies they'd brought and in no time at all, a sudden silence. The darlings were gone . . . on their way home for a full night's sleep.
The rest of us visited a little more and then, Buddy and I left. When I got home, I realized I hadn't offered to help clean up. I felt bad about that but soon changed my thoughts to those of sleep. It had been a very long day that extended until much later than normal. The birthday dinner had been so pleasant. Imagine, an evening with my babies AND my darlings. Does it get any better than that? I don't think so!!
